Mega Industries’ waveguide tuners are available with either manual or motorized operation. We offer probe and stub tuners, as well as E-H tuners. These units range in size from WR-28 to WR-2300. We utilize non-contacting, single or double bucket short circuit designs for high power operations. Low power versions are also available utilizing contacting short circuit designs.

Probe Tuners
The basic operational characteristic of the device is the insertion of a set of capacitive probes spaced at either 1/8λ or 3/8λ apart. The device is placed in the system as close to the load mismatch as possible. In theory the desired matching effect could be accomplished by a single probe spaced at an odd number of quarter wavelengths from the load mismatch. In practical terms however, placing a probe at the exact position is tedious and not possible for variable loads. This is where Probe Tuners prove valuable, making use of a combination of 3 or 5 probes allowing a load mismatch to be tuned out. These devices are available for either manual, precision manual, or motorized operation. Remote readouts and operating panels may be provided upon request.
The devices utilize Mega Industries’ contacting plunger designs for reliable high power operation. Three probe units will readily match out a 1.25:1 mismatch while the five probe version will compensate for up to a 1.5:1 mismatch over a limited bandwidth. The insertion of the probe can limit the highest power levels these devices can be used at to 60% to 75% of full waveguide peak power levels.
Stub Tuners
Stub Tuners utilize a set of 1 to 3 waveguide stubs to be used for impedance matching. The most common of these units utilize Mega Industries non contacting double bucket short circuit designs for high power operation. Low power versions are also available utilizing contacting short circuit designs. Single stub units will match out a 2:1 mismatch over a 5% bandwidth. The double stub unit will match a 4:1 mismatch over a 20% bandwidth. The shorting buckets used in these designs can be water cooled to increase continuous or average power handling capacity and are able to withstand full peak power across the band.
